Why you should read? Is Basildon Essex a nice place to live? Planning on a Premier Inn stay? Is it worth staying, and if so, for how long?
Tea provisions
Tea provisions were sufficient for the majority of guests, however, I felt because I’m addicted to tea, I was a little more picky than most. The provisions were mostly consistent throughout my 9 week stay, with some subtle variation in quantities. Typical provisions included: 2 medium sized mugs, 2 teaspoons, 2 small glasses, 4 small tubs of semi-skimmed milk, 2 sweetener sachets, 2 white, and 2 brown sugar sachets, 2 instant coffee sachets, and 2 PG tips teabags.
The 4 small tubs of semi-skimmed milk were inconsistent with the sweeteners, because if we take a standard cup of tea with 2 sugars, you could make 3 cups at this sweetness, but wouldn’t be able to make a 4th. Let’s say you like particularly milky tea. In this instance, you would have to split a tub for these to be equally milky. Therefore, sweeteners should have been increased, with consideration to the number of milks. Also, on one occasion, the spoons were not replaced, so I was unable to stir my tea without using my own emergency fork.
Only a small kettle was provided, so it would have been nicer to have a little more capacity.

Overall then pretty good, everything was present mostly, and was displayed in a visually appealing way.
Cleaning and washing
On arrival, my bed was made daily. This had just 3 exceptions throughout my 9 week stay. It was fairly compensated for however, with complementary breakfast provided once I’d reported to reception. Sufficient towels were also provided, (3-4 on average per day).
The bathroom provided 2 dispensers, one by the sink labelled “gentle soap”, the other in the bath labelled “hair and body gel”. I had no issues with the toiletries running out, suggesting they were replaced sufficiently frequently. Toilet roll was also replaced frequently.
The shower had easily adjustable pressure, providing sufficient power. Temperature was easily adjustable. Unfortunately, the head could not be lowered, making washing “all but the hair”, a tough task. I whipped out my emergency pink shower cap, to resolve (not really!).
Now perhaps it’s because I have no common sense… The first time I used the shower, I couldn’t switch between the bath tap and the shower-head. I eventually found out you had to pull the lever on the bath tap.

Consistently warm and pressured shower, toiletries well replaced, shame about fixed shower-head.
Mirrors
My wardrobe provided a full body viewing mirror. The bathroom displayed a 3/4 body viewing mirror. There was also a half height mirror beside this.

Sufficient mirrors were provided, in the living space and bathroom.
Clothing
2 coat hooks were provided beside the door, alongside 6 hangers (5 trouser hangers, 1 shirt hanger). This was consistent in room 119 and 123. These hangers were almost sufficient. My previous reviews have suggested 10, as the optimum hanger number for a double room, so this cut things fine if sharing with a partner, but the drawer below the wardrobe and height of it, provided space for folded clothes to be stored effectively.

Sufficient storage for single guests. For multiple, hanger number should be increased a little.
Bins
2 bins were provided; 1 of reasonable size in the bathroom, and the other was adequate under the desk. Extra items were placed next to the bin, and regularly taken, including bottles and packaging.

Sufficient bin-space was provided for most items. Instructions were clear to place extra recyclables next to the bin. This system worked well…
Charging points
3 functional charging sockets were provided, which was just about sufficient for my gadget charging requirements, if rotated. One more would have been ideal.

A little limited, not all plug sockets worked, and my gadgets outnumbered the sockets.
Lighting and heating
3 lamps and a bar light were provided, with the bar light built into the beds’ headboard. This cast relaxing pink light… The colour that features on the Premier Inn logo background…
The curtains kept the room dark throughout my sleep, regardless of daylight levels.
The heating worked well once the thermostat was adjusted, but the radiator gave a loud tick when turning off. This sometimes kept me awake, requiring thermostat adjustment prior to sleep.

A quieter radiator would have improved a generally positive experience.
Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi was slow throughout, and after a period of activity absence, it automatically reset to default, requiring repeated logins. It dropped out on occasion, for example from 8:55am on Sunday 13th November till at least 9:45am. I had to phone Virgin Wi-Fi to get this resolved. It was however free though, unlike some places I had previously stayed. There was a very brief power-cut, but on the whole, power worked effectively.

Wi-Fi coverage was a bit patchy, and quite slow. Room for improvement here…
Breakfast
My complimentary breakfast included:1 fried egg, 1 cooked tomato, a few mushrooms which were chewy, not soggy, and 1 black pudding which was the highlight since it was very rich in taste and soft in texture. There were 2 small sausages that possessed good texture, but had limited taste, 2 hash browns were provided which tasted nice, beans were sufficiently warm. p.s. I can’t stand cold beans. Finally, 2 bacon rashers were provided which were thin, and not crispy. I personally prefer juicy rather than crispy bacon, but would have preferred thicker rashers.
Of the continental options, the croissant was crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside, and wasn’t too sweet. Despite the menu advertising unlimited breakfast, the staff didn’t make it clear if this applied to cooked items, or only continental options.

The breakfast had sufficient quantity, and most items were enjoyable, including the black pudding and hash browns. The meaning of unlimited needed clarity however, and some items could have been improved, such as the sausages.
Staff hospitality
I must compliment the staff on their friendly nature and helpfulness. Some became very familiar after the first few weeks of my stay. They helped me out when my room hadn’t been serviced, and showed an interest in the reason for my exceptional 9 week stay.
Summary
It isn’t normal or easy to live in a hotel for 9 weeks. Fortunately, staff kept my stay enjoyable, albeit I am far from a kettle chef, and overused my go-to light meal of bananas and tortilla wraps, and main meal of boiled filled pasta, with tinned peas. I would recommend for a weekend or short break, especially for those looking for a comfortable bed at a relatively affordable price, with commutable location to London. Why not stay at East Mayne Premier Inn, for access to the industrial hub of the delightful Basildon? …

It was mostly to visit family and also leisure, drinking some Swedish beers. I had not visited Sweden, my home country, for more than four years.

Wow, that’s a long stay but glad it was great for the most part. And glad the staff was nice. As a tea lover myself, I understand what you mean. But I guess not everyone drinks so much tea daily so it may not be a big problem for all their guests.
