Introduction
Vivarium is a 2019 (Horror/Mystery/Sci-fi) movie.
Impact
Vivarium takes the viewer from a typical life situation, and encourages them into a world of insecurity. It uses mechanisms that resonate with people, reminiscent of daily life activities. It surprises and shocks, and features strained relationships, which worsen over time.
Evil isn’t revealed too early, yet becomes more prominent towards the end. Sound is used well to portray character accurately, and viewer emotions. Characters are played well, with a consistently clear element of a committed relationship. Setting is shot well, highlighting key features.
I would suggest a major element of the film is the dynamic between main characters, highlighting turmoil well, which is enhanced by the environment and effects. The setting wasn’t developed constantly however, leading to some moments which didn’t seem necessary for the film to flow. Tension whilst palpable in relation to the relationship, isn’t applied in a Horror sense which targets the viewer; I feel the viewer is placed as an outsider, rather than a member of the relationship.
Summary
Vivarium will keep you engaged if you enjoy slightly strange happenings, and relationship turmoil …
