Typically up to one hour either side of high tide, you can cross over the Strood. within this, it gets covered by the Colne and Blackwater estuaries.
I rode my bike to the Strood, having planned to reach it at low tide. When passing onto the island, there was one split in the road, directing to either the east or west side of the island.
I began with the west side, where I found a picturesque marina, depicted in the photo above.
The range of colours were soft and warming, soothing the bracing nature of the refreshing, yet beating, salty air.
It occurred to me, today was just another opportunity; An opportunity for a lucky soul to use his weekend alone, to have space to enjoy his surroundings. It was almost enchanting how still the world was… No commuters, no rush, no immediate requests or demands.
I guess that’s part of the appeal of seaside locations. Gradually, my sense of time and reality returned. I therefore began considering how long the tide would remain low, and whether my cycling-weary legs would be able to resume high cadence, without feeling especially rigid.
I rewarmed my body using the pedals, and after a few exploratory turns, I was on my way to East Mersea. I reached a main road with a sign labelled “East Mersea”, and continued in that direction… About half a mile beyond, was a broken down car with the all important Red triangle to chant “Ive broken down”, beware. Between said triangle and the car, was a blonde lady looking at her phone.
Because cars were waiting, I continued past. I returned later to offer her some help, after realising there was nothing at the east of the island other than a few small houses, and several holiday caravan parks.
She thanked me for the offer, but declined. I was a little relieved about this, since I possessed no devices to connect to the internet, and she was already holding a phone. I therefore almost certainly wouldn’t have been much use to her, even if she had required assistance.
I then found my way back onto the Strood main road. I often find, islands with only one road off tend to get pretty clogged up, so not wanting to hold up the traffic, I briefly entered my Chris Froome position. This worked rather well, with no hooters tooted in frustration of my bicycle reducing traffic flow speed. Following return to the mainland, I cycled home.
Summary
“Mersea island is a pleasant location for a meal out, or brief visit”. Beware however of high tides, and be mindful that there really aren’t many facilities in East Mersea, except caravan parks.

Sounds like a very fun place for a day trip. It’s always nice to take a break in a quiet place without too much going on.

Yes it was very refreshing to see tbh. Always calming to be at the edge of land 🙂

As a short story writer, reading this blog post about a solo adventure on Mersea Island transported me to a peaceful place where time stood still and the natural beauty of the island was the only thing that mattered. The description of the colors in the marina and the salty air was particularly evocative and made me feel like I was there myself. The reminder of the importance of being mindful of the tide and the lack of facilities on the east side of the island added an element of realism to the story and made it feel all the more authentic. Overall, it was a delightful read that left me wanting to plan my own adventure to a seaside location.

Nice review – we’ve stayed with friends in East Mersea and I agree it is very remote – good for getting away from it all!

I don’t know if you’re still seeking comments on ideas for future content (and I see you do cider reviews) but food pics and chat seems to go down well. Maybe we’re all just greedy!

Thanks so much and of course I am always on the lookout for content ideas. Can you elaborate on “chat” as an aspect of written articles. Do you mean content that encourages interaction, or that focuses on conversations I have experienced I.e. person x stated this. I think or said this …

Content that encourages interaction, I think… I’m not an expert on this stuff. But it seems to me that photos of food gets a lot of attention.

Not sure anyone is an expert. I treat blogging like my playground. We get the feedback and have to work out how to improve it through experience. I love the trial and error really, whilst being sure to stay true to my authenticity, where possible 🙂 Thanks so much for your support

Well worth a visit. My husband is a World War 2 history nut, so obviously the Channel Islands appealed to him, but there is so much to do and see, and it’s very beautiful. I don’t like the heat (being from Scotland…) but if you do, and you visit in the summer, you’re going to get mid to late 20s temperatures. As a veggie, I don’t eat fish but again if you do, there are a lot of restaurants specialising in fish.

I like that kind of heat, not the 30’s they frequently get in Spain though. Sounds like you like the sights mostly and the environment as you have talked yourself out of the food and the temperature 😂 I will have to go there one day, maybe if I reach retirement …
