Why you should read? Left a comment on a YouTube video recently? Perhaps you thought your sarcastic sense of humour may get the attention of the YouTuber. Perhaps you may be flattered to hear that he replies to your comment, suggesting it was so good it’s won a prize. All you have to do now is, repeat that message, then send direct to them on the Telegram app…
The scam!
I’m sorry to say, scams are never far away…
Recently, whilst commenting on 2 of my favourite YouTube channels, my comment has been replied to by fake profiles, with subtly different names e.g. Beard “Meat” Food, rather than the official plural “Meats” spelling, and identical profile pictures, to official channels. One such comment, depicted in the image above, implies you’ve won something, based on comment quality. Not a totally implausible premise. Especially if you’ve left, what seems like, a rather insightful comment …
In one case, this user was impersonating BeardMeatsFood. A well known YouTube competitive eater (Channel link in Sources below). They offered rewards, direct in the comments section of his videos, which invites you to repeat the comment on the official Telegram app. They then ask for your name and address, stating you need to pay around £150 to a shipping company of your choice, to receive your prizes.
That money is of course gone forever as part of the scam. No prizes are ever received by subscribers …
I know it’s a quick post today, but a very important one for those who feel such comments and prizes, are genuine. If in doubt, always check the comment posters’ profile out on YouTube. If the comment wasn’t made by the official profile, it won’t be genuine.
