Why you should read?
Are you a fan of variety including: Romance, Mysteries, Setting changes, Pets, and Horror mechanisms in thought-provoking, and somewhat psychological movies? Then look no further…
According to IMDb, Under the Silver lake is a 2018 (Crime/Drama/Mystery) movie.
The unusual features early on, with some low level gore and character discomfort/stressors.
Lead character discomfort continues throughout, with main character inconvenience, and misfortune regularly repeated. The use of creepy voice for storytelling was well delivered, enhancing the eerie ambience. Darkness was well applied, reflecting darker movie themes such as violence, brutality, and gore. As the movie progressed, delusions and psychology remained key to the lead characters reality, which retained viewer mystery of whether evil sightings were real or imagined.
Hallucinations continued to feature frequently throughout, coinciding with visual effects at times. Secrets were not only held in codes, but also destinations. As the film continued, the Mystery elements superseded the Horror mechanisms, becoming ever more prominent, yet on occasion, such Horror mechanisms were still applied throughout. Often these mechanisms were present as dreams. These mechanisms are outlined in more detail, in the section below.
Dead animals featured throughout, and were used as indicators of sinister actions, yet the source of evil was kept unknown for a considerable length of time into the film, increasing the level of mystery. False alarms were well used, to vary levels of viewer tension felt. Darkness was used well during daylight hours, with shadows and silhouettes, thereby retaining mystery, which was an effective visual tool. Breathing rate, mist, and character emotional anticipation, were also used well. Masks helped maintain mystery, and character behaviour including body language, in combination with the unusual appearance masks enabled, promoted “fear of the unusual”, a mechanism used in many Horror movies.
Whilst Horror elements were not highly frequent, good variety in mechanisms was presented, with identity of evil not revealed too quickly.
Squeamish reaction sounds were applied alongside instruments, to quickly create tension, and facial expressions followed up, to increase a sense of character vulnerability. Emotions were used well throughout. Symbolism and folklore added a further layer of depth, to the plot and effects. Such symbolism became part of the element of mystery, yet also added in an element of ritual to proceedings.
Threats and pressure of everyday life were used to enhance perceptions of Horror, which was a clever idea I have rarely seen included in Horror movies before.
From the first 20 minutes, I could already see this movie was indicative of a Horror genre, even though not categorised as such on IMDb p.s. (Crime/Drama/Mystery). Plot complexity allowed the movie to transcend multiple genres, including Romance, Mystery, and Horror well.
Secrets were not only held in codes, but also destinations.
The ending had plenty of surprise, with encryption a key part of the mystery element. As with most effective Horrors, symbolism and religion played key roles. It also didn’t explicitly answer the mystery at the end, as to stay thought-provoking for the viewer; This also left potential for a sequel.
Doesn’t feature Horror mechanisms and tension-building frequently enough, especially towards the closing stages, to attain a rating above (8/10). Consequently, isn’t easy to categorise by genre, as features of other genres were also peppered throughout.
Cleverly thought-provoking, and somewhat psychological Horror/Romance.
