Insidious Horror Comparison – Final 2
Insidious: Chapter 3 (7.5/10) vs Insidious: The Last Key (6.5/10)
My Pick
“Chapter 3 is in a class of its own, only second to the original movie. The Last movie is the weakest yet, minimal dignity is regained with a thought-provoking ending”.
Lockdown
From 4th July in the UK, pubs and restaurants can reopen amongst many other businesses. Swimming pools, Indoor gyms, and theatres though, remain closed.
So I continue my 2 times a week blog posting, for those who need that extra lift to get them out of lockdown …
Introduction
With the same creator studio as the Purge and Paranormal activity, what better way to continue my movie series comparisons, than with the spine-tingling horror series of Insidious; This studio is called “Blumhouse productions”. The word “Insidious”, refers to something which slowly develops. Something that appears to be fine, but is actually very harmful.
This implies hiding, which is a key feature of any suspenseful horror.
Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) (Horror/Mystery/Thriller) (7.5/10)
Good points
“Believable acting”.
“Clear plot”.
“Reflects normal life well”.
“Some truly startling moments”.
“Evil was well hidden”.
“Tension was built quickly”.
“Sound volume was frequently changed”.
“Shocking ending”.
Bad points
“Predictable opening”.
“Frights happen at expected times”.
“Lack of plot twists”.
“Very few surprises”.
Conclusion
Apart from the predictability and oversimplified plot, the movie was a clear entertainer. The viewer was mostly kept engaged by some shocking activity, featuring well taken camera shots to hide evil.

Insidious: The Last Key (2018) (Horror/Mystery/Thriller) (6.5/10)
Good points
“Action quite early on”.
“Links in the end to other films”.
“Ending regains some plot integrity”.
Bad points
“Opening not convincing, no tension”.
“Slow story pace”.
“Acting is pretty minimal besides lead role”.
“Despite being only 1 hr and a half, it dragged through the mostpart”.
“Action was sparse at times”.
“Lack of tension or shocks”.
“Not much horror factor”.
Conclusion
From the start, to close to the ending, this film lacked fear factor and any significant mystery. Towards the end, the mystery improved slightly. This gave the viewer, more to consider.
Overall, The Last Key, can barely be called a horror. It loses sight of all that made the original a scary and entertaining spectacle.
Summary
The Last Key had a thought-provoking ending, yet was marred throughout, by poor tension-building, and fear factor. Chapter 3 had some truly shocking moments, great suspense, and a clearer plot.
My Pick
“Chapter 3 is in a class of its own, only second to the original movie. The Last movie is the weakest yet, minimal dignity is regained with a thought-provoking ending”.

I haven’t seen any of the “Insidious” movies so I don’t know much about this one either. But I have noticed that sequels of horror movies aren’t always as good as originals. They tend to lack some of the horror factors.

Totally agree with this, it does tend to be the case, Deep blue sea shark horror I found to be an exception though in that 3 is better than 2, although original is still the best …

With Halloween some of the newer films are better than the original of 1978.

Yes definitely. I still like the shining which I think is around 1980, but films like Annabelle creation and the boy are pretty good 🙂 thanks for reading
