(47 meters down: Uncaged) vs (47 meters down)

“For Action, watch Uncaged, For Horror, watch the Original. There is no need to watch them in order”.

Introduction

Lockdown may have been amended in the UK, but I am sure you still have time for a sneaky movie every now and again. I’m comparing films, to help you select the best form of entertainment, in these strange times. Who you gonna call ? Reasea.org 🙂

Film introduction

47 meters Down is a 2017 Adventure/Drama/Horror movie focusing on shark attacks !

47 meters Down: Uncaged  is a 2019 Adventure/Drama/Horror movie also focusing on shark attacks.

I shall refer to 47 meters down as “The Original” in this review, and 47 meters down: Uncaged as “Uncaged”.

What I like (47 meters down) (8/10)

Immediately, effects, sounds, environments and moods are changed frequently, creating a fun opening, with enough plot background to introduce events to come. A strong psychological emphasis is placed on scenarios in the movie. The movie challenges your own logic, and decisions you would make, which adds another layer to a shark horror. The ending again surprises and isn’t predictable. Emotions seem realistic, which is quite refreshing for a shark movie. Tension can be felt at the appropriate times.

What I like (47 meters down: Uncaged) (8/10)

There is a tense opening with clear distress immediately. This is set in the same way as “The Original”, which was good. The opening here is particularly fun and uplifting, the plot is clear early on, and adventure is obviously a good genre choice.

It’s action-packed ending wasn’t predictable, which was almost as refreshing as the plot. This was distinct from most of the shark attack based movies I have seen.

Comparison

Uncaged is more of a family movie. The plot is clear for all to understand, yet has enough nuances to get you thinking. The original still gets you thinking, but not just in keeping up with events, but also in placing events in the correct order. This makes the Originals’ plot slightly “Deeper”.

Uncaged is never as suspenseful or scary as the original, yet it makes up for this with its consistently action-packed plot, and innovative scene environments throughout. The setting changes are more refreshingly in Uncaged, preventing boredom effectively. I’d argue Uncaged is a slightly more entertaining, for a watch.

As a Shark horror though, the Original has far scarier environments and effects. As an Adventure/Action film suitable for the whole family, Uncaged has it in my book.

Since both films are listed under Adventure and Horror genres, they are each better at one of these, making them on par overall.

Conclusion

For Action watch Uncaged, For horror watch the Original. There is no need to watch them in order.
