Packaging

Islands Apple cider may look familiar to those who haven’t seen it before, because the can design is near identical to Inches. My Inches cider review commented on the attractive bottle design and colour scheme, I must say that it’s the same vibe here.

The brand message seems to preach about sourcing everything locally, with an assertion of locally picked and 100% British apples. This is clearly trying to compete against inches directly as that is their brand message too. I won’t knock it till I’ve tried it though.

As for the can from Aldi, it costs £3.75 for 4, so 94p per can which is very good value. Practicality wise things are pretty good as it costs 94p for 2 units at 4.5% ABV in a 440ml can. This means to hit the 4 units per day max for men it costs less than £2. This is almost identical to the cost of inches which is also good value.

So for taste expectations the can doesn’t exactly signpost you very well at all, and there is no website making it very hard to know what to expect without turning to its close rival Inches…

Light carbonation, good balance and moderate dryness were 3 such traits that I expected from Inches so we’ll start there …

Smell

The scent faded quickly, but seemed fairly natural and not too acidic. It was rather pleasant which was good.

Taste

Carbonation level seemed pretty good on pouring, although it faded into rather light fizz after a while. Acidity seemed very light and not overpowering. The drink didn’t seem to have much tang. It didn’t have the dryness hoped for which was a shame, this was absent. It had a nice level of moderate sweetness and wasn’t sickly though, which was good. Disappointingly there was no real USP.

Thankfully however it lacked bitterness. The flavour was natural too, however the level of flavour wasn’t full, it was moderate at best.

Since nothing was overpowering the cider would work well as part of a session. The mouthfeel was moderate, so quite good.

Balance was also good, as tang or sweetness were not overpowering. The entire taste was smooth and it had nothing harsh about it.

The aftertaste was natural, if a little weak.

Summary

“Natural and fruity, but not as good as Inches”.
